Steve de Rosa, Director, American Language Center Mohammedia

Since becoming director of the American Language Center (ALC) of Mohammedia last year in 2013, I have had the extreme pleasure and fortune to get to know Nakita Valerio on both a professional and personal level. As a teacher for the ALC, Ms. Valerio was outstanding. No matter what level or type of student she taught, she stood out. She was as brilliant with her very young learners as she was with her adult students. Likewise, she was as effective in her methods with her beginning level classes as she was with her advanced ones. Nakita’s students loved her—and for good reason. She diversified activities in the classroom and kept the students laughing and having fun while learning at the same time.

Nakita excelled outside of the classroom as well. She was one of the few teachers that I knew I could rely on to work on a project independently, from start to finish, in a very professional way. Over the past year, she developed tests, syllabus, curricula, and flyers, organized events, and ran successful clubs. She used her influence and popularity to start a movement against street harassment that is now spreading to other areas of the country. Naktia is multi-talented and always impressed me as I discovered more of her skills throughout the year. Along with her many talents, she is a wonderful artist, graphic designer, writer, poet, and journalist.

Apart from her work ethic, Nakita was a positive force on the ALC staff. Instead of complaining in vane about problems, she addressed them and worked with the administration to help fix issues. She was both patient and understanding which made working with her a wonderful experience. With Nakita’s combination of personality, hard work, drive and intelligence, I am confident that she will always succeed at whatever tasks, responsibilities, or goals that she takes on in the future—regardless of how difficult those may be.
