The Drawing Board Staff Team Up For Women’s Safety

The Drawing Board owner, Nakita Valerio, has teamed up with staff writer and researcher, Rachael Heffernan, to hold a Women’s Safety Training session for females concerned about increasing violence towards women in Edmonton.

The event will be held in the gymnasium of Al Rashid Mosque on December 12, 2015 from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

This class is a one-time information session for Muslim women in the Edmonton community to learn about self-care, preservation and safety in our increasingly difficult times. The instructor, Rachael Heffernan, is a triple black belt karate instructor and she is donating her time to help Muslim women learn.

Women will learn how to survey their surroundings, properly memorize characteristics of individuals and defense techniques in the event they are victims of verbal or physical assault.

You must RSVP for this event. Women without a ticket will not be allowed to attend.

Children are welcome and child-minding with an Edmonton Public School Board certified teacher will be available. Please bring your own food, drink and other necessities for you and your children. Nothing will be provided. Child-minding comes with a $5 fee to cover the cost of the child-minders and activities. Only cash is accepted.

You do not need to wear athletic clothing. Come dressed as you would normally dress an is appropriate for entry into the mosque. The training will take place in the mosque gym and there will be chairs for your use.

The majority of the training will be verbal with some demonstrations. Please arrive respectfully on time and eager to learn.

Organizers will be taking cash donations which will be used as a honorarium for the instructor. The remainder will go to assisting agencies who are working with refugees.
